The Power of Date Setting
I was sitting at the table of a cute Ethiopian restaurant with a dear friend Emily when, once again, I was asked the question "When are you leaving?". While I had been planning on departing in the fall of 2017 for at least year at that point, I never set a specific date and my reply was something in the nebulous range of "Something in the fall I think.". Emily was not amused. You have to have a date!
She of course was right. Marinas are full of people who are going to depart next season...and next season is always a season away. With a date, things are real! You have a deadline, you have a time to which excitement builds. You have focus.
Being the paper planner, schedule everything, write down everything girl that I was, out popped my schedule and the dates of various gigs were examined, North Pacific hurricane season considered, and a date was chosen. I would depart the 26 of September 2017.
Instantly my excitement began to build. I left our lunch invigorated. While I had been working pretty much full time on my boat for the month and a half prior, something changed and the energy doubled. I made a todo list, massive and detailed, and everyday became a quest to progress on that list in preparation for departure.
Inking that date in my calendar has given me odd assurance in that tasks that I do. Things which were intimidating before, like ripping off the cabin door to rebuild it, just became things that had to happen. There are three months to go, the door leaks, it needs rebuilding, off it must come. Since the date was chosen, my todo list has been getting knocked down steadily and that, in turn, has fuel the energy behind my progress. I know I won't get it all done, but I'm confident that I'll get the important things done and it will all work out.
A couple of times I've briefly considered moving the date. It's not my favorite tide window, and a couple of fun Bay Area events have caught my eye, but the magic of having a date has won out. Of course safety rules, and the sea is not to be trifled with, so weather might change my plans, but September 26, is day Adélie and I plan to head out on our big adventure...
